Asian & Pacific Islander's Women's Summit

Cambodian Community Boat
I was invited to join my friend Cynthia
 Tom https://www.linkedin.com/in/cynthiatom
who was one of the leaders in in the Asian and Pacific Islander Women's second annual Summit with the theme of "Building Power- Setting Sail" on September 20th to help with the boat making workshop portion of the program. There were so many different communities  present including Mongolia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Tibet, Nepal, Philippines, Korea, Pacific Islanders, and an American Indian group and I witnessed amazing creative flow. The women in each group were contributing to their community boat- each with its own theme- and collaborating around key questions to guide them. This was a very organized event run by CHAA, Community Health for Asian Americans that offered a lot of ways to connect with each other with time for sharing and building networks.  Cynthia had brought in many tools and did a bit of speaking around the symbols common to all these diverse groups.
She used the tea bag as a token to remember someone with paper attached where they wrote down the number of someone they needed or wanted to call in the future. There was also a group alter where each group had placed items and the opening ceremony was lead with a drum and a ritual to greet the four directions. To bring 130 women together with common purpose was inspirational and moving for me. And the boats were stunning.
